Bridging Borders: What Happened When Our Sydney Team Touched Down in Kunming
Cloud BIM models, Teams chats, and shared digital dashboards are brilliant for day-to-day delivery across time zones. But let’s be honest: there’s still no substitute for pulling up a chair across from your teammates, sharing a good feed, and marking up drawings together in person.
Recently, two of our Sydney team leaders – Associate Daniel Zhang and Modelling Leader Ozzy Zhang – packed their bags and headed overseas to spend dedicated time on the ground with our Kunming office.
While both offices collaborate constantly on Revit models and engineering packages every single week, this trip marked the first time Daniel and Ozzy met the Kunming crew face-to-face.
Here is a look inside the trip, what the teams worked through side by side, and how it directly benefits our clients and projects back home in Australia.
Putting Faces to the Screen: Real Knowledge Sharing in Action
Engineering intricate hydraulic and mechanical services leaves zero room for guesswork. When you’re routing pipework and ducting down to the millimetre on high-density towers, complex retrofits, or heritage landmarks, tight alignment across teams isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s everything.
During the visit, both teams got stuck straight into bilateral knowledge sharing:
- Digital Workflows & BIM Delivery: Ozzy spent dedicated time with Kunming’s drafting and modelling specialists. Together, they refined shared 3D coordination protocols, standardised drawing outputs, and ironed out digital workflows to ensure our models are delivered quicker, cleaner, and clash-free.
- Australian Site Realities & Code Nuances: Daniel ran interactive sessions on the practical challenges faced on Australian construction sites. They walked through how design decisions made on screen hold up under National Construction Code (NCC) requirements, local council overlays, and the physical constraints trades face on the slab.
Cutting through screen fatigue and having these conversations across the table helped both offices resolve technical bottlenecks on the spot. The takeaway? A far tighter, fully synchronised delivery pipeline between Sydney and Kunming.
On the Ground: Sourcing Next-Gen Siphonic Solutions
The trip wasn’t just spent behind monitors in the studio.
Joined by our China Office Manager, Louis Qian, Daniel headed out to inspect an advanced manufacturing facility specialising in siphonic roof drainage systems.
For anyone delivering large-footprint commercial and industrial roofs – think distribution warehouses, retail centres, and transit hubs – siphonic drainage is absolute gold. Unlike conventional gravity systems that need bulky downpipes and sloped horizontal pipe runs, siphonic systems use negative pressure to pull rainwater through completely full pipes at high velocity. That means zero pipe slope is required, smaller pipe diameters can be used, and far fewer downpipes penetrate the building floor plate.
Visiting the factory floor firsthand allowed Daniel and Louis to:
- Inspect Manufacturing Standards: Review fabrication methods, material durability, and rigorous factory testing procedures up close.
- Assess Australian Suitability: Evaluate how these high-capacity systems perform against demanding Australian Standards (specifically AS/NZS 3500.3) and the intense storm downpours our climate dishes up.
- Explore Direct Supply Partnerships: Identify opportunities to bring reliable, cost-effective siphonic technology directly to Australian builders and developers who need high-performance stormwater infrastructure on tight structural footprints.
